It was a miracle when Kenya in-country partner Elizabeth happened to hear a baby crying outside a nearby home in her village.
“To my shock, I found a young girl—approximately 12 years old—being reprimanded harshly by a man who was shouting, ‘Why bring this baby here? My wife is not the mother, and I am not the father!’”
A Life or Death Situation
The young girl explained that the baby, Precious Amaya, was her niece. Her sister, the child’s mother, ran away weeks earlier and had not returned. With school about to reopen, the helpless girl was left without anyone to care for the baby.
“What broke my heart was when she said, ‘If nobody takes her, I will throw her into the Sabwani River,’” Elizabeth recalls.
Elizabeth knew in that moment she had to intervene. She reported the situation to the area Chief and local police, and received formal instruction to care for the baby. Her mother has never returned.
You Saved Precious Amaya's Life
At the time of rescue, Precious was not yet walking but had learned to feed herself, a sign of early independence driven by neglect. Since joining her Kinship family, she has flourished! She is now walking, learning to speak, and is a source of joy and laughter in the Kinship Project. She is dearly loved by everyone, especially the other kids!
Elizabeth reports, “Precious Amaya has become a cherished member of our family. Her story is a testament to the power of compassion and the value of every child’s life. We believe that she will grow into a strong, healthy, and confident young girl.”
