We get it. With so many needs around the world, it can feel overwhelming to decide which causes to support. Your heart might tell you to help them all – and we totally understand that! But, that’s not always possible (unless you’re MacKenzie Scott, of course).
But here’s something we want you to know: when you choose to support Kinship United, you’re not just making a donation – you’re stepping into a truly unique nonprofit experience.
What Makes Us Different?
It’s the lasting, generational impact of your support. Your gift doesn’t just change lives in the moment – it ripples out over time, raising children who, in turn, inspire and uplift the next generation. It’s a legacy of hope, and it’s one that continues to grow.
Children like Rita look up to the Kinship Kids who came before her.
Rita’s Story
Born to Rwandan refugees, Rita grew up in a small village in Uganda. Her father worked on a farm owned by a kind man named Paul. Despite their hardships, Rita found joy in simple moments—like being with her father around the farm animals.
In 2020 everything changed. During the pandemic, Rita’s father fell ill and passed away, followed soon after by Paul, the farm owner. With no one left to support them, Rita and her mother were forced to leave the farm. The loss was overwhelming, and soon after, Rita’s mother developed a severe mental illness, leaving her unable to care for Rita.
Alone and vulnerable, Rita faced a frightening future, with dangers like malaria, TB, and also child trafficking threatening her safety.
Thankfully, the Local Council stepped in, connecting Rita with the Kyengera Kinship Project—a turning point that offered her a lifeline when she needed it most.
Finding Inspiration
Rita’s journey mirrors that of Flavia, a proud Kinship United Alumna, who once found herself in the very same state of despair.
At just three years old, Flavia lost her mother. And two years after that, her father followed, leaving her alone in a world that didn’t seem to care.
You can read more of Flavia’s story here.
Today, Flavia stands tall—not just as a survivor, but as a beacon. She’s a mentor, a teacher, a guiding light for kids who’ve walked the same rocky paths she once did.
And just like Flavia, Rita is on the path to rebuilding her life.
A New Start
Today, Rita’s life is a world away from the uncertainty she once knew. She has a safe place to call home, complete with a warm bed, nutritious meals, and a community that surrounds her with care. Rita now attends school, where she’s learning to read and write—skills that fill her with pride and excitement.
She’s growing stronger every day, not just in knowledge but in spirit, as she discovers hope and resilience alongside her new friends. She enjoys playing with the other children at the home, whether it’s running around outside or sharing stories during quiet moments.
Her absolute favorite time of day, though, is when everyone gathers to pray and sing together. Those moments wrap her in a sense of belonging and love, reminding her that she’s part of a family again.
Though she still carries the pain of losing her parents, Rita is beginning to heal, her laughter echoing through the home as she builds a brighter future.
