Shafiq's Story
"Hello, my name is Kakooza Shafiq. I’m 16 years old, and my journey has been marked by unexpected twists and turns. I used to live with my blind grandmother, a woman who loved me deeply despite her own struggles. Her blindness and our lack of resources made it hard for her to take care of me. Every day was a challenge, but we found hope in each other’s company, clinging to each other because she was all I had. But later on, she passed away, leaving a hole in my heart.
As for my parents, I don’t know where they are or what happened to them. I have no memory of them—only the emptiness of their absence."
A New Home and New Opportunities
"When life became overwhelming, Bakka Kinship offered me a safe haven. It was a place where I felt secure, and for that, I was grateful. But as I grew older, my pastor suggested that I move to Kireka Kinship Home so I could pursue my secondary education, as there was no secondary school nearby Bakka. My heart ached to learn music, a passion I couldn’t ignore, and I needed an opportunity to pursue it.
God opened a door, and I was taken to Kireka Kinship Home, where I finally had the chance to continue my education. It was there that I met Elijah, an alumnus of Kinship United, who shares my love for music. His presence was like a light in my darkness. For the first time, I felt seen, heard, and understood. Elijah’s guidance gave me a sense of belonging I hadn’t felt in a long time. Music became my refuge—a place where I could pour out my sadness and transform it into something beautiful.
Throughout my journey, my pastors at church prayed for me, offering encouragement and reminding me that God’s love reaches even the most forgotten places. Kinship United, too, became a lifeline, providing the support I needed when everything felt impossible.
Through the tears and lonely moments, I’ve learned that life’s hardest paths can sometimes lead to unexpected blessings. I am grateful for:
- My grandmother, whose love, even in her own struggle, remains a guiding light in my life.
- Bakka Kinship, for giving me shelter when I had nowhere else to go.
- Kireka [Kinship], for giving me the opportunity to pursue my education and dreams.
- Kinship United, for being a constant source of support.
- Elijah, for sharing my passion and inspiring me to keep playing music.
- My pastors at church, for their prayers and encouragement during my toughest times.
My story is a testament to God’s love and provision. Even though I’ve faced sadness and uncertainty, I am no longer just a child without hope; I am a child with a dream, a voice, and a purpose. Every note I play is a reminder that, even in the hardest moments, there is always a reason to believe in something greater."
