Agnes was four when her only parent, her father, was killed when violent raiders ambushed and stole their cattle.
A safe home with the Buloba Kinship Family in Uganda gave her dignity: a bed, clothes, a meal she did not fear losing. But when she looks back, it was her Kinship Family that healed her most. The home Pastor, his wife Sarah, widowed Maama Mercy. They loved her every day, and showed her how to pray.
“The girl who had lost one father found another Father who could not be taken from her, and it changed the way she stood in a room,” said in-country partner Eddie. “She leads worship not because she is gifted, but because she has something to sing about.”
For fourteen years, Agnes grew up, carried by Christ, loved by her Kinship Family, and became known as the girl who stays.
When an orphan is first rescued, healing comes slow. The new child sits alone, silent, unsure how to play or love. Agnes is the one who stays. She’ll sit down. Not talk, not yet. Just sit and stay and show the new kid he or she will never be alone again.
It’s no surprise Agnes has grown up to be the one other Kinship Kids look up to. Not only is she a dedicated student who loves to tutor her siblings of all ages, she leads worship and is a loving sister to all.
But the girl who stays will soon leave. Agnes got a letter of acceptance to study Education at a university in Tanzania, where her father comes from.
Her dream begins there. Then she wants to come back and be for other children what her home parents were for her.
