How many Bibles do you have in your home? My husband and I probably have between 10-15 Bibles. Not to mention the Bible app on my phone that's always with me!
And because of the accessibility of the Bible in America sometimes it’s easy for us to take the Bible for granted. We forget there are people in other parts of the world who don’t have the easy access to the Bible that we do. Some people don’t have Bibles because of Christian persecution, others because of illiteracy, and still others just can’t afford to buy a Bible because they are too poor.
But people are hungry for the word of God.
Even children have an overwhelming desire to learn more about what the Bible says. In fact, they are so hungry for God’s word that when one of our caregivers asked children in Matibo Kinship Home about their greatest need the children quickly answered, “A Bible!”
“In Sunday School, we read about good stories like Joseph, David, and Esther. But when I look for them in this Bible, I am told they are not there. If they are not there, then, is this a Bible?” asked Mubogi as he held up his New Testament Gideon’s Bible.
After being asked this question Wanda had to explain to Mubogi that his Bible was indeed a Bible, but it was only the New Testament. While Mubogi was satisfied with Wanda’s answer he also let her know he really needed to have the Old Testament so he could go home and read the stories he learned about in Sunday school.
If you have children, then I am sure you’re thinking, “YES! A child who wants to learn more about the Bible and spend time reading it on their own!” Cause, that’s exactly what I was thinking when I heard about Mubogi!
Wanda asked for us to get children’s Bibles which will be easy for children like Mubogi to read and give them a real opportunity to learn more about God’s love for them. One Bible only costs $8. Would you be willing to give three children in Uganda Bibles by giving $24? These children need Bibles they can understand and can call their own.
If you can’t give a Bible right now, here’s one thing you can do: take the lesson from these children to heart! Be thankful for the Bible you have and your easy access to the word of God. And let’s go after Mubogi’s enthusiasm for the word of God!
