Meet Soriya Mut, a young woman who grew up in Cambodia. Soriya worked her way up to a career as an accountant in the bustling capital city of Phnom Penh after living in an orphanage for part of her life. But how did she do it? It all started with a hunger for God’s Word.
Most poor families in Cambodia can’t afford a good education for their children, so in rural parts of the country, like where Soriya grew up, there are a whole lot of kids who don’t know how to read very well. Girls are also less likely to be educated, so with Soriya being a poor young girl outside the big city, the odds were completely stacked against her.
But Soriya didn’t let that defeat her. After becoming a Christian, Soriya’s passion to learn how to read the Bible, and apply it to her life, grew. She practiced learning to read it daily, and whenever she ran into something she couldn’t understand, she asked her Pastor for help.
As she developed her ability to read and write and her love for God evolved, she found other opportunities opening up in her life. After working as a house maid and a garment factory worker, Soriya felt that her new abilities qualified her to apply for a higher position: and she got the job!
By learning to read God’s word, Soriya not only grew in her relationship with God, but He changed her entire life. From house maid to accountant, orphanage to bustling city, God rebuilt Soriya’s life and her future.
