Poverty to Profit: Finding Female Empowerment in Uganda
Countless women in Uganda suffer from domestic abuse. Traditionally, many Ugandan women don’t have incomes of their own, and many of their husbands lord this over them. Beaten down and berated, they’re punished for being “burdens” in a society where men are seen as the primary breadwinners. But not anymore. Now you’re helping to empower these women! In August of 2018, our Kinship Partners in Uganda hosted a women’s conference as part of their Women of Worth Empowerment Program. Widow Spotlight: Meet Linet, Caregiver at the Geta Kinship Project
Our unique and effective Kinship model brings both orphans and widows together under one roof, helping each other through their grief and sorrow. Widows serve as the orphans’ caregivers, giving them new life and purpose, and giving the children the love and affection they desperately need. In many cultures where our Kinship Projects operate, women who lose their husbands, are outcasts. They are seen as cursed or deserving of their fate. Where there are high rates of alcoholism and poverty, domestic abuse becomes a serious problem, and yet many women stay in dangerous situations because without her husband, a woman’s Caregivers
