Helping children worldwide doesn’t always require rescue and full-time care. Sometimes children and young adults crave the connection and feeling of belonging Kinship Projects provide. And sometimes a child just needs encouragement, a relationship with God, and a helping hand to achieve their hopes and dreams.
Choek Srey Neath had the cards stacked against her before she was born. Being the last child in her family and a daughter, societal norms dictated that she wouldn’t have the opportunity to pursue a college education.
It’s customary for girls not to earn degrees because they stay home, cook food for the family, and take care of the children.
However, her other option was to work in the garment factory with her two siblings.
But Choek wished for more.
First Steps to a New Future
In 2018, God led Choek on a path that would get her closer to the future she had only dreamt of.
She had the opportunity to join the youth leadership conference held by the Kinship Cambodia Ministry and the Chom Choa Kinship Project. She developed a strong connection with the congregation and met with Pastor Jack Horm Kosal.
During their meeting, Pastor Jack asked Choek about her goals after she graduated high school. Choek admitted that she wasn’t able to afford additional studies, and she had no hope that her family would support her education.
But despite the roadblocks, she felt passionate about becoming a graphic designer.
After the conference, Choek prayed about the future she wanted. Pastor Jack told her that God will answer her prayers if she continues to pray for her vision.
Disciple and Designer
Choek never lost faith. A few years later, she had the opportunity to meet Pastor Jack again. She continued to share her dream of becoming a graphic designer. And this time, Pastor Jack was the answer to her prayers.
Thanks to the generous support of incredible contributors, Pastor Jack was able to offer her a scholarship! He only asked that Choek involve herself with the church and serve God during her studies. Which was an easy “Yes!” for her.
There’s No “One Way” to Help Others
The impact of your gifts towards helping children looks different for every child and every country. In this case, supporters built a strong connection between a young woman who was nearly lost to societal pressures and her loving Father in Heaven. The Chom Choa Kinship Project may not need to raise Choek Srey Neath, but thanks to incredible donors, Pastor Jack was able to help her grow in her faith and grow in her future.
And that future looks bright for her!
She graduated from her design program and applied for a prestigious job in the capital. And at the same time through the church, she learned how to serve others, share with the poor, and lead worship. She’s even being recruited to be a worship leader.
